New Delhi, India: India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has launched the Blockchain India Challenge, a national initiative aimed at promoting blockchain adoption to improve efficiency, transparency, and accountability across the public sector.
The programme was unveiled at the ministry’s headquarters in New Delhi by Secretary S. Krishnan, alongside senior officials and representatives from key technology institutions and startup ecosystems. The initiative seeks to encourage Indian startups to design and deploy permissioned blockchain solutions tailored to real world governance challenges.
The Blockchain India Challenge focuses on building scalable, secure, and practical applications that can be piloted in collaboration with government departments. Permissioned blockchain systems, which allow controlled access to verified participants, are considered suitable for public sector deployment where regulatory oversight and data integrity are critical.
The challenge identifies a wide range of sectors where blockchain can deliver measurable impact. These include e procurement systems, public distribution networks, supply chain management, education records, healthcare data management, agriculture traceability, energy systems, Internet of Things integration, land record digitisation, and environmental sustainability initiatives. Startups are also encouraged to propose innovative solutions for additional government use cases beyond the listed priority areas.
In his address, Secretary Krishnan highlighted blockchain’s potential to strengthen trust in public systems by ensuring transparency and tamper resistant record keeping. He emphasised the need for practical solutions that can transition from concept to pilot stage and eventually scale across states and departments.
To support innovation, selected startups will receive structured mentorship and stage wise financial assistance. Special focus will be given to enterprises recognised by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, enabling them to accelerate product development and real world testing in partnership with public agencies.
The launch of the Blockchain India Challenge reflects India’s broader push to integrate emerging technologies into governance frameworks. Policymakers have increasingly explored blockchain applications in areas such as digital asset management, land registration, and secure document verification as part of the country’s digital transformation roadmap.
With this initiative, the government aims to foster collaboration between the public sector and India’s growing startup ecosystem. By leveraging blockchain technology, the ministry hopes to create more transparent, efficient, and citizen centric service delivery systems while strengthening the country’s position as a leader in digital innovation.
