On Wednesday, the first exchange in Hong Kong to allow professional trading of BNB, the cryptocurrency supported by Binance founder Zhao Changpeng, was OSL Group, which runs the city’s first listed and licensed virtual asset trading platform.
Institutional investors with a minimum portfolio size of HK$8 million (US$1.02 million) were the only ones permitted to trade BNB on OSL. These investors were permitted to exchange the token for US dollars as well as USDT and USDC, the two biggest stablecoins in the world.
Zhao, also known as CZ, recognized BNB’s achievement as the most recent “cryptocurrency to be traded on a Hong Kong-licensed exchange” in a post on X on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The introduction of BNB trading in Hong Kong is indicative of initiatives to support the city’s reputation as a significant hub for digital assets.
According to Kevin Cui, CEO of OSL Group, this was “a major step forward for Hong Kong’s virtual asset market” on Wednesday. He stated that OSL anticipated “strong demand from Asian institutional and professional investors for regulated access to digital assets beyond bitcoin and ether” .
Professional investors can now trade 24 different kinds of cryptocurrency tokens, OSL told the Post on Wednesday. 26 tokens are now available for professional trade on HashKey Exchange, one of the first approved exchanges in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Only five cryptocurrency tokens\u2014Bitcoin, Ether, Solana, Avax, and Link\u2014have been authorized by the Securities and Futures Commission for retail trading in the city thus far.
OSL began trading BNB tokens professionally a few days after Zhao made several public appearances last week, including speaking at the University of Hong Kong and the city’s second Bitcoin Asia conference.
Zhao stated in an exclusive interview with the Post last week that Hong Kong had the potential to develop into a significant hub for digital assets, but that the city needed to act swiftly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He recommended that Hong Kong immediately increase the number of cryptocurrencies that are allowed to be traded on the city’s approved exchanges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Recently, Zhao’s cryptocurrency company has expanded its operations in Hong Kong. Last month, Zhao’s family office, YZi Labs, announced a collaboration with China Renaissance, a Chinese investment bank that finances some of the largest tech companies on the mainland. The bank also purchased $100 million worth of BNB tokens.
It will “help facilitate compliant listings” of BNB on authorized Hong Kong virtual asset exchanges, according to a statement from China Renaissance. It will also encourage listed companies in the city to utilize the BNB Chain for use cases relating to stablecoin and real-world asset tokenization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
