{"id":3795,"date":"2024-08-09T11:47:53","date_gmt":"2024-08-09T11:47:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blockwind.news\/china\/2024\/08\/09\/uae-and-hong-kong-central-banks-agreed-to-collaborate-on-crypto-regulations\/"},"modified":"2026-01-07T17:09:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T17:09:13","slug":"uae-and-hong-kong-central-banks-agreed-to-collaborate-on-crypto-regulations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blockwind.news\/china\/2024\/08\/09\/uae-and-hong-kong-central-banks-agreed-to-collaborate-on-crypto-regulations\/","title":{"rendered":"UAE and Hong Kong central banks agreed to collaborate on crypto regulations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">June 6, 2023<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Tsering Namgyal<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates (CBUAE) and the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has agreed to beef up cooperation in regulating virtual assets, amongst other areas, during a meeting last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two central banks are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dimsumdaily.hk\/hkma-and-uae-central-bank-collaborate-on-cryptocurrency-regulations-and-financial-technology-development\/\"><u>reportedly<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;planning to form a \u201cjoint working group\u201d to push forward developments in crypto regulations in two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hkma.gov.hk\/eng\/news-and-media\/press-releases\/2023\/05\/20230530-5\/\"><u>statement<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;by the HKMA released last week, the working group will focus on strengthening bilateral ties in areas including financial infrastructure and market connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHong Kong and the UAE are two financial centers sharing many complementary strengths and mutual interests, and there is much room for market participants from these two places to work together and build up the connectivity,\u201d said HKMA chief executive Eddie Yue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United Arab Emirates \u2013 which has a dedicated crypto regulator, the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) \u2013 is taking an increasingly proactive approach towards regulating crypto. It\u2019s known as one of the most crypto-friendly jurisdictions in the world. In April, its regulators began accepting applications from cryptocurrency businesses for operating licenses in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hong Kong\u2019s new licensing regime for crypto sector went into effect last Thursday, a regulatory green light that is expected to attract a horde of companies willing to offer crypto trading services in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new norms have pushed the former British colony to the forefront of jurisdictions with progressive regulatory regimes governing cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">H.E. Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the CBUAE, said: \u201cWe are pleased to have welcomed the Hong Kong Monetary Authority and its delegation to the UAE as we look to build on our central banks\u2019 existing and robust relations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said that two authorities \u201cexplored deepening collaboration across several important areas including financial market infrastructure development and mutual opportunities for growth in digitisation and technological advancement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, HKMA also held a luncheon with major financial institutions and corporates in Dubai, \u201cto promote Hong Kong\u2019s value propositions as a leading international financial centre and strengthen financial collaboration with the UAE,\u201d according to the HKMA statement. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The three-day visit to the UAE was led by HKMA chief executive Yue, and joined by senior banking executives from major Hong Kong banks such as Bank of China, HSBC, Standard Chartered and Citi.
