{"id":3159,"date":"2024-08-09T11:01:43","date_gmt":"2024-08-09T11:01:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blockwind.news\/china\/2024\/08\/09\/apple-to-allow-third-party-app-stores-in-a-windfall-for-nfts-and-crypto\/"},"modified":"2025-12-29T19:06:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-29T19:06:08","slug":"apple-to-allow-third-party-app-stores-in-a-windfall-for-nfts-and-crypto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blockwind.news\/china\/2024\/08\/09\/apple-to-allow-third-party-app-stores-in-a-windfall-for-nfts-and-crypto\/","title":{"rendered":"Apple to allow third-party app stores in a windfall for NFTs and crypto"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">December 20, 2022<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Anjali Kochhar<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tech giant Apple is gearing up to permit third-party app stores on its devices to comply with new anti-monopolistic requirements from the European Union (EU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the new rules, European customers would be able to download alternative app marketplaces outside of Apple\u2019s proprietary App Store, thus allowing them to download apps that skirt Apple\u2019s 30% commissions and app restrictions according to a Bloomberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-12-13\/will-apple-allow-users-to-install-third-party-app-stores-sideload-in-europe\">report<\/a>&nbsp;citing those familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At present, Apple has stringent<a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/new-apple-rules-double-down-on-30-nft-tax-and-geo-limits-exchanges\">&nbsp;rules<\/a>&nbsp;for NFT apps that practically force users to go through in-app purchases subject to <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/grotesquely-overpriced-apple-s-app-store-wants-30-cut-on-nft-sales\">Apple\u2019s 30% commission<\/a>, while apps are not permitted to support cryptocurrency payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apple\u2019s enforcement of its rule <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/coinbase-claims-apple-blocked-wallet-app-release-over-gas-fees\">led to a block<\/a>&nbsp;of Coinbase\u2019s self-custody wallet app update on Dec. 1 as Apple wanted to \u201ccollect 30% of the gas fee\u201d through in-app purchases, something that is \u201cclearly not possible\u201d according to Coinbase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It then claimed Apple wanted the wallet to disable NFT transactions if they couldn\u2019t be done through its in-app purchase system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apple\u2019s move to open its ecosystem is in response to the EU\u2019s Digital Markets Act <a href=\"#new-rules-in-a-nutshell\">aiming<\/a>&nbsp;to regulate so-called \u201cgatekeepers\u201d and ensure platforms behave fairly with part of the measures allowing \u201cthird parties to inter-operate with the gatekeeper\u2019s own services.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will be applicable starting May 2023 with businesses needing to fully comply by 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The changes to Apple\u2019s closed ecosystem would apply only within the EU, other regions would need to pass similar laws such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/117th-congress\/senate-bill\/2710\/text\">proposed<\/a>&nbsp;Open App Markets Act in the United States Congress from Senators Marsha Blackburn and Richard Blumenthal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>About the author<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anjali Kochhar covers cryptocurrency stories in India as well as globally.
