The Ethereum Foundation has selected Mumbai as the host city for Devcon 8, marking the first time the ecosystem’s flagship global conference will be held in India. The event is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026, the foundation said in an official announcement.
The decision underscores India’s rapid ascent as one of the world’s most active hubs for crypto development. The country added more new developers to the sector in 2024 than any other nation, driven by a young, highly technical population and an expanding network of grassroots Web3 communities.
A mature local Ethereum ecosystem also helped tip the balance. Initiatives such as EthMumbai, Devfolio and high-profile global projects like Polygon have built robust training pipelines, accelerator programs and hackathons that have brought thousands of new developers into the Ethereum fold.
According to the Ethereum Foundation, India’s growth has not been orchestrated by institutions or government policies but has emerged organically from community-led participation — a characteristic the foundation described as making India one of the most authentic and energetic Web3 environments globally.
The announcement comes despite India’s turbulent policy climate. A 30% tax on crypto gains and a 1% transaction levy on most trades have pushed many founders to relocate to hubs like Dubai and Singapore. Still, domestic activity continues: exchanges such as CoinDCX operate under strict compliance rules, and several states are piloting blockchain projects. Parallel to this, India’s central-bank digital currency trials and its expansive digital payments infrastructure — anchored by UPI — signal continued momentum for blockchain experimentation.
The foundation invited the global Ethereum community to gather in Mumbai in 2026 and thanked its Devconnect hosts in Argentina. Organizers described Devcon as both a “homecoming” for long-time Ethereum contributors and an entry point for newcomers seeking to understand the ecosystem.
With India now leading the world in developer onboarding and crypto adoption, Devcon 8 is expected to become one of the most consequential editions of the conference to date.
