Several of Hong Kong’s eight digital banks are contemplating the establishment of physical branches following the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s (HKMA) recent approval, which aims to support the growth of these financial institutions.
WeLab Bank, ZA Bank, and Mox Bank are among those evaluating the possibility of opening traditional branches, while Livi Bank has indicated that it has no such intentions, as reported by the banks to the Post in response to inquiries.
In 2019, the HKMA granted eight virtual bank licenses to foster innovation and competition within the sector. The subsequent year saw the launch of operations for ZA Bank, WeLab Bank, Mox Bank, Ant Bank, Livi Bank, PAO Bank (previously known as Ping An OneConnect Bank), Airstar Bank, and Fusion Bank.
In a significant reform for these institutions since their inception, the HKMA introduced a new regulation in October permitting limited physical branches. Additionally, the authority has redefined the term “virtual bank” to “licensed digital bank” to enhance public trust in these entities.
A spokesperson for the HKMA stated, “Considering industry feedback, the HKMA believes that allowing digital banks some flexibility to operate through non-electronic channels in a restricted manner will facilitate improved transaction processes and enhance customer experience.”
“The HKMA will thoroughly assess the rationale and justifications when reviewing applications from digital banks seeking to establish a physical branch.”
