The OpenAI Newsroom account on X has recently fallen victim to a hacking incident. Cybercriminals disseminated a link to a dubious website that promoted a cryptocurrency scam. The fraudulent tweet asserted that OpenAI had launched a new crypto token named $OPENAI, stating, “OpenAI users are eligible to claim a piece of $OPENAI’s initial supply. Holding $OPENAI will grant access to all of our future beta programs.”
Additionally, the post included a link to a counterfeit version of OpenAI’s website, hosted on a URL distinct from openai.com. The OpenAI Newsroom account boasts nearly 54,000 followers.
At the time of this report, the tweet promoting the $OPENAI token had already been deleted. Currently, there has been no communication from OpenAI regarding the incident or the identity of the individual(s) responsible for the breach. Furthermore, X has not provided any details concerning the hack. The OpenAI Newsroom account was established only a few days ago, earlier this month.
This breach of the OpenAI Newsroom account occurs shortly after the AI company unveiled the new OpenAI o1 mini model. The OpenAI o1-mini model is engineered to tackle intricate tasks, including Mathematics, Coding, and advanced problem-solving.
OpenAI has indicated that forthcoming updates will enhance the model’s capability to address highly specialized, PhD-level scientific inquiries, thereby providing solutions to complex scientific challenges.
The OpenAI o1 model was launched concurrently with the o1-mini. As implied by its name, the o1-mini is offered at a lower price point and with fewer features compared to the full o1-preview model, serving as a faster, cost-effective reasoning model particularly adept at coding tasks.
The o1-mini provides comparable reasoning capabilities and serves as a budget-friendly alternative for individuals who prioritize logical problem-solving over extensive knowledge.
While users of ChatGPT Plus and Team have access to the complete o1 models, it is noteworthy that the o1-mini is freely accessible to all. Users can select both the o1-preview and o1-mini models from the model picker, with initial weekly usage limits established at 30 messages for the o1-preview and 50 messages for the o1-mini.
The introduction of the OpenAI o1 mini follows the release of the OpenAI o1, which is derived from the confidential Strawberry Project developed by the company. However, the o1 model is exclusively available to paid subscribers, with a cost of $15 per million tokens. Consequently, the o1 mini model was introduced to cater to ChatGPT free users.
