In a groundbreaking move towards bolstering digital security, Brazil is set to roll out its new national identity program leveraging blockchain technology. The initial phase will see Rio de Janeiro, Goiás, and Paraná becoming the first states to issue identification documents through a private blockchain developed by Serpro, Brazil’s national data processing service. According to a decree issued on September 25, the entire nation is slated to implement blockchain-based identity issuance by November 6.
Alexandre Amorim, President of Serpro, emphasised the pivotal role of blockchain in safeguarding personal data and preventing fraud. He stated, “Blockchain technology plays a critical role in protecting personal data and preventing fraud, offering a more secure digital experience for Brazilian citizens. Utilising the b-Cadastros blockchain platform significantly enhances the security and reliability of the National Identity Card project.“
The national ID initiative is instrumental in combatting organised crime and fostering seamless collaboration among government sectors. It aims to simplify access to services and streamline administrative records. Buenos Aires, Argentina, recently unveiled a similar project, enabling residents to retrieve identity documents through a digital wallet.
Over recent years, Brazil has been dedicated to unifying identity issuance procedures across its nearly 30 states. This novel technology will facilitate more secure data exchange between the Federal Revenue and various government departments, as announced.
In a parallel development, Brazil is making strides towards introducing a central bank digital currency (CBDC). In August, the government provided further details about the project, rebranding the digital currency as “Drex.” The central bank envisions broadening business access to capital through a tokenisation system linked with Drex. Notably, the Drex code allows a central authority to enact freezes or adjustments in balances, according to a local developer.
This innovative integration of blockchain technology into Brazil’s national identity program signifies a significant leap towards a more secure and efficient digital ecosystem. With the potential to fortify data protection and enhance authentication processes, the initiative underscores Brazil’s commitment to modernising and securing its digital infrastructure.
